Sandy Shores Lake
6/20/2015

Had some time to go out fishing and I figured I would continue my search for the best bass lake in my area. Unfortunately this was not it. I saw a bunch of bass fry and saw one 6" and a five or larger pound class bass. With only one good fish seen, and none caught in over 5 hours I would say there are a few bass in the lake. I don't know if it was the day but I had nothing for them and I threw my best stuff. I went even as far as breaking out the old school keitech spider grub and still got nothing. I decided at about 9 to swap to my old faithful 1.0 bluegill square bill and have a trawl at dusk for some trout. I pulled one large bow about 2.6 lbs at nine thirty on the north end of the lake. The fish had beautiful color and once unhooked I let her be free again. I took a risk trying to find the best bass lake around and got to see a new lake and a pair of eagles cruising around. Not a win but not a place I will take the time to return to.

Met a new fishing buddy from long lake bass fisherman's club. Bob was a great guy to have out on the water an he had a very nice boat. I did my regular thing and packed up enough snacks and lunch for us all. The wife made some great sandwiches to take out and they worked out well. There were a few boats out on the lake and Bobs son and back deck man joined us for some time out. They tossed swim baits for a while and then moved over to cranks and came up empty. I caught one bow on a crank-bait and Bob got two on regular worms. I was just happy to be out during the weekend and for such a great day out. The sun was up and out and there was no rain and very little wind. Not much fish to show for our time out but it sure helped with the cabin fervor.

I was headed to hicks lake to give it a try as i only had about two and a half hours to fish prior to having to report to dinner with friends and the wife. I did some speed fishing for bass as i was short on time, i ended up landing three with a good one at about three and a half pounds. I was alone here with no other boats to cause problems and only a few bank fishermen. I still see a good fish running along the western shore that i am unable to catch, maybe some day.

Fall trip to kitsap lake

Got a late start looking for some fall action on kitsap lake. The water is looking very green with a ton of algae and it looks like the lake just went threw turnover. I had a lot of options with me so i started off with a small crankbait. I got one hit but lost the fish almost right away. I had nothing else for a few casts so i went to pitching a ZOOM super hawg. I picked up a nice four pounder almost immediately pitching to docks and the rest of the day nothing. One good fish is not bad, but this lake is very temperamental in my experience. There was only one boat out towing a wake boarder and one guy that raced around the lake once and was done. I have experienced very few days as calm and the water glassed out when the boats were not present.

Looking for a place to catch small mouth, as i had yet to get one in this state. I took my daughter on the trip and headed out to the lake about noon. My plan was to use some plastics deep and try some dropshot. My plan was gone the second i arrived at the lake. There were lots of power boats and jet ski's. The good news i thought was i stumbled onto some good looking pad fields. I did have my jig rod with me but not my normal frog rod. I chopped off my leader and commenced beating the pads to death. Hours later i had not a single bite in all the pads across the lake. To say the least i was a little disappointed. The boats here were a little more respectful and slowed as they passed and i only really had issues with the ski's. With all the wake i had to keep with moving baits and i did catch about half a dozen perch between 8-10" and two small LMB. Just about nightfall i caught a half pound small mouth bass, the first i have ever caught in Washington. It was not large but i was happy to get one.

Left to try a new lake today. I am looking for a place to catch bass and i have yet to score. I observed two fish in the 3-4 lb class in this lake but unfortunately i was unable to catch either one. It was a beautiful hot day and i was very happy to be on the water. Rocked my brand new Berkeley flicker shad and cleaned house. It got 6 of the 9 i caught today but i believe the split rings or hooks are not perfect. The fish shook the hooks loose some of the times and i would have had more but lost 3 which i did not count. I may try some round bend hooks first as i dont have any small split rings on hand. The trout were not huge but i had 3 or so that were respectable and no really small ones so the day was not a total loss.

Got a late start as the family wanted to roll to the zoo and getting out on the water was just an opportunity. I decided to give buck a chance as my parents are up visiting and there are some nice trails and a park right next to the lake and i could get out on the water while they were kept busy. I ended my short two hours with one 11 inch rainbow. My regular crankbaits did not produce, but it was a bluebird day, which is not normal for this area, and i did not have a ton of time to try and get dialed in. I used a spinner to grab my one catch for the day on a cast and reel.

The boat was going to have a picnic and i was there early to set up. Things were going slow so i asked the wife to grab my spinning rod and bring it out. Luckily i had my tackle bag in the back of the car from a previous trip so i was good to go. It was raining by the time the event kicked off so people came to eat and took off soon after. I grabbed my rod and it the pond. I ended up with one bite and miss and two 10" stockers which i kicked back after a pic. A great way to kill time while the event was going on, but no giants.

WYE lake

I love to get out and sample every bit of water in my area. This is a lake that is close enough to get to in an afternoon and i got out early enough so i thought i would give it a chance. Well at least the weather was outstanding. I paddled the entire lake about 5 or more times, tossing a squarebill for bass and trawling all my best stuff. I landed one 10 inch rainbow and dropped another. For the 5 or so hours i spent there i was underwhelmed. There was a huge group of tadpoles at the ramp when i showed up so my son had a good time playing an looking at them before we launched. I conversated with a few guys out on the lake and they were catching a few of the 10 inch clones and two 14" rainbows were got by a guy who lived on the lake in a boat. He was rocking the bait and wait and we all know how much i dislike that. I was given the heads up that the bass do not get active until the big three months of summer. I may return to try this lake during that time but i doubt it with all the other waters in the area to try.

Horseshoe lake

I got a late start on the day as i was off going duty and did not hit the lake till about noon. There were a decent amount of people fishing the shore and about 5-6 boats and tubes out on the water. The people at the dock cleared as i pulled up to launch and then took the spot back once i was clear. I started off tossing the new kvd 1.0 square bill in bluegill that i had just picked up and got a stocked rainbow almost immediately. I felt this was going to be any easy lake to dial in and hammer them. Well it did not work out that way and i got 5 fish total and only two on the same bait. I got three rainbows all small about 10" and two bass. The one i landed was only about 10" also and i dropped a 4ish pound bass right at the side of my yak. He jumped and the hook popped right out. All of my fish were caught on 6lb test and it seems that is the only line i can get bit on. Threw a bunch of other baits on my casting setup with 10lb and only got one bump. Things may change a little when the vegetation builds up a little but finesse seems to be the only way here.

The best of times are when everything comes together and you have a great day. For the short period that i have been a born again fisherman i think i have more than my fare share, but there are still those days when you dont figure them out, or you find out why you had shifted to a different line or technique. Today's conditions were different than what i most often fish, the sun was out and the sky was blue as i have ever seen it here for Washington. I also was fishing with 10lb test while previously i had been using 6. Most of my catches lately have been trout, and the density of bass in my area is low. I will never again, (if i remember) go without a spinning rod with lite line. I bought 1500 yards of fluorocarbon and have yet to spool any up. I will load up in the morning to make sure i am good to go. There were some nice fish being caught today, several three pound or better taken on worms and dough. I cannot bring myself to sit and be bored.

Early day off work hit the lake

Kitsap lake
3/21/2014

Got off work early and the wife and kido's are off on vacation, time to hit the water for some quality time to myself. I no longer had to share the yak so i had tons of room with no fear of breaking a rod or loosing something overboard. I have a new plan and some new baits. I picked up some small flat side cranks from DUO to try out and they worked awesome. I am not a big fan of rapala shad raps and this was what i was going to try as the alternative. I am very happy with the result. I dont know that i would fish these in an area with pickerel as they are not a cheap option, but in Washington there not around so i will continue to rock the crap out of these little jewels. Nine rainbow trout of decent size in about 3 hours and i was doing way better faster than the bait guys. I had several that i did not land, including a fish i estimate to be about three pounds. I should have been using a moderate speed rod, but i did not have one with me. The hooks are very small and i had a few fish throw the lure when they went airborne. Live and learn

Kitsap lake

So i meet up with a friend from the boat, and this is going to be our first trip out together. I have never seen this person fish or know how they feel about being out on the water. I do all the common sense checks, do i have a spare rod he can use? Is the nucanoe set up for our weight balance? One thing i did identify early on was that i did not have a life jacket for him. I have mine and my sons, but not another adult jacket. So after loading up the yak, we head to Walmart to grab him a vest to wear. I do not know the specifics for this state so i will default to the person has to have one on at all times. In CT there is a season where they are required to be on and time when they just have to be in the craft. The winter season is the more restrictive. So, we get to kitsap lake and head from the ramp with the wind down the shore toward the military camp. We spend 2 and a half hours fishing the outside of the lake and get only one bite each with nothing landed. back between the ramps people are doing very well on trout and i shift over to a small spinner and get my limit in about 30 minuets. We leave about 330 pm with five rainbows landed and having a decent time. This lake is still not one of my favorites and the trout just saved the day.

island lake

Looking to not have rain for the first weekend in forever so what the heck, grab the yak and out I go. No idea what the water temperature is but island lake is very small compared to kitsap lake so i figured with the warmer temps outside and the sun out on Thursday and Friday, things may start coming to life. Go to the lake at 12:30 and stayed until about 4:45. I would not dare to try and describe the action as i got only one bite and one fish landed. Seems like a good ratio to me as i would have been pissed to miss the only fish of the day. I go here to island lake as it is close to my house, but on any weekend end day after the season opens up i dont see myself coming here until winter and the closure. One LMB for my efforts 2lb 10oz, not bad for the first fish of the year. Got the bite on a Spro Aruku Shad Jr, in Spooky Shad color. It is my second fish on this bait as i got one that grabbed it and dove under the dock at kitsap and broke my line.

Headed out around 10 to give kitsap lake another try. This location is not one of my favorites, and after the trip remains that way. I trawled the entire lake with no bites. I went back to casting the shore and i got a decent bass on a spro rattle bait, but it dove right back under the boathouse and broke me off. seven bucks down the drain and only one 6" baby bass in the boat. i think i just may hate this lake.

lost lake
10/26/2013

Left the house about 11 ish on a new lake adventure. The season i winding down on a lot of lakes here and i wanted to check this place out as it appears to be open all year. I tossed the yak and the boy in the van and headed out. Kind of a long drive for me at 1 hour 30 min so i had high hopes that it would work out well. Passed mason and isabella lake on the way. Pulled up to the ramp at 1230 and slid the boat into the water. There was a man and his two kids at the bank fishing for trout and they were having some decent luck, with three keepers in a few hours. His kids and my boy played as i was setting up and then we started fishing. I went right after leaving the ramp and headed around the lake counter clock wise. This put me in the deep end first and i was not doing so well but the scenery was very nice. I had no idea what the water temp was till half my day was done and i found out it was 54. I was trying to jerk-bait and that was getting me zip so i shifted to crank bait in hopes that i might pull up something. Well never pictured trout on a strike king 3xd but they seemed to like it just fine. From about mid lake to the corner of the deep side i cranked up 4 decent rainbows and then back to nothing. i used the same crank for the rest of the lake and pulled one tiny 6 inch bow. I was basically done and i planned to trawl back to the launch. I switched out to a Little john MD in Chartreuse Black Back and started taking them down. One after another. I hooked a really nice one, might have been the largest of the day, and handed the rod to my 5 year old. I told him to crank as fast as he could but he dawdled and the fish got off. Got 6 more after that and i called it a day. Not much for doing laps in the middle of the lake, but it was working very well. Gave 2 fish to the guy on the dock, ended up eye hooking them threw the mouth and could not throw those back.
